About 120km northwest of Christchurch lies Lake Sumner Forest Park. It is situated between Lewis Pass and Arthurs Pass National Park. The Sisters Stream Track lies on the southeastern edge of The Park, and can be tramped within a day, or as part of a multi-day circuit.

Early in the walk the track crosses the Hurunui River via the Sisters Swingbridge. The track does not cross the river again. It stays beside it, or takes a detour up on the river terraces to avoid a loop in the river. The track is 8.3km long, and takes about three hours to Gabriel Hut.
Gabriel Hut is a small hut of four canvas bunks and a fireplace. It is situated in bush by the Gabriel Stream, which flows down from the Gabriel Valley and is used by trampers, hunters and fishermen.
