Keas are inquisitive, intelligent, cheeky and very endearing parrots, found in the alpine areas of the South Island of New Zealand. They are protected. Their call is a wonderful “keeeeee-aaaaaa” sound. They are attracted to ski field areas as a source of food. We are mindful of leaving our car in a ski field car park for any length of time – rubber sealings, windscreen wipers, not to mention ski racks, can experience a kea attack! These photos were taken at Porters Ski Field car park, about 90km northwest of Christchurch, at an elevation of 1300 m (4,000ft).
